During a race, every hundredth of a second matters. And when you’re standing behind the blocks, the last thing you want to think about is whether your suit feels right. A technical racing suit is an investment, so you want to make sure that the one you choose will enhance your performance, not distract from it. For swimmers, the right fit can make all the difference. It affects how you feel stepping up to the blocks, how you move through the water, and how you perform.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare to purchase your next racing suit, so you can show up feeling confident and ready to unleash your unstoppable.

Fit Over Size

The most important rule: prioritize fit and feel over the size you think you should wear.

How the suit feels on your body matters way more than the number on the label.

Each brand (and suit style) will fit your body differently, so don’t assume you know your size or feel pressured to wear a size based on what your teammates are wearing. Swimmers with the same measurements might prefer completely different fits depending on body composition, race preferences, and feel. Focus on what feels right on your body, and make sure the suit meets these criteria:

  • A snug, second-skin feel
  • No loose fabric or gaps

Optimal Compression

Compression is one of the main benefits of racing in a tech suit, but it’s easy to confuse tightness with effectiveness. A properly compressed suit will feel tight at first, but you should still be able to breathe and move comfortably once it’s on.

Too much compression can limit breathing and even interfere with your stroke. Too little, and you lose the benefit altogether. The right amount will give you:

  • Support without constriction
  • A secure fit without causing pain

Maintain Mobility

Don’t sacrifice mobility for a smaller suit size. If the tech suit limits your range of motion or creates unwanted resistance at any point during your race, it’s likely the wrong size or cut.

You also don’t want to be overly aware of the suit as you swim, or have to make adjustments to your stroke because of limited mobility. Find a suit that allows you to maintain your race mechanics and make sure you can do the following before you race:

  • Fully extend your arms/legs
  • Perform starts, turns, and breakouts without resistance
  • Maintain body position and stroke mechanics
